Main Street Design Guidelines for Hawthorne

In 2018, Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association (HBBA) adopted the Main Street Design Guidelines for application to Hawthorne. These are voluntary design guidelines and provide helpful community tools for new development. HBBA is working now with PDX Main Streets Design Initiative and Forage Design + Planning to customize these guidelines for Hawthorne and to proactively set goals for new development.

Where do the Design Guidelines apply?

The focus of the guidelines is the area along Hawthorne from 6th to 60th with concentrations of our most special historic buildings found around 30th to Cesar Chavez Boulevard (39th).

Who’s involved and how?
Working with PDX Main Streets, The Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association, Richmond Neighborhood Association and other neighborhoods, local businesses, the community and design consultants, we are engaging the community to identify our design priorities and goals. Clarifying the community vision is a key part in the process, as well as identifying our desired character and identity, our special buildings and important sites for special planning consideration.

Progress + Process

We've held two large public visioning workshops, hosted two design walking tours of upper and lower Hawthorne, and gathered information on the communities design goals and concerns. In addition, we've identified a list of 57 Special Character Buildings (draft adopted by HBBA) and 16 Key Sites for special planning. Now we're working with HBBA to craft a Design Supplement to the Main Street Guidelines and advocating on city policy to advocate for more context-sensitive main street design standards and guidelines.
